Though there are many species of spider mites. We are concerned with the species that attack cannabis plants. Two spotted/Russet spider mites and Broad/Cyclamen Mites. You will most likely need a magnifying glass to find two spotted spider mites. While broad mites on the other hand you would need a microscope as they are about 0.1 mm long.Spider/Russet mites like to live on the underside of leafs therefore being hard to spot however there telltale sign of feeding Will be yellowish White spots on top of leafs Which is usually identical to the damage caused by Thripes.
Use a 10× – 30x magnifying glass to help to identify mites and their translucent eggs. Females lay up to 20 eggs per day in a life span of 2 to 4 weeks. Eggs hatch in three days one female can I have 1 million mites a month in ideal conditions. Accelerated reproduction allows mites too quickly adapt and become Resistance to pesticides.
How did i get mites?
Spider mites enter the garden on infested clones, plants, clothes, pets etc. Unclean growing conditions are the main cause of mites therefore cleanliness is the most important first step to spider might control.Mother plants often have spider mites. Spray mother plants regularly with alternating miticides , including once three days before taking cuttings (Clones)
Steps to getting mites under control
– Create a hostile ( for mites ) environment by lowering the temperature to 60°F ( Spider mites thrive in a dry 70° to 80°F climate and reproduce every five days in temperatures above 80 )
-Remove leaves that are more than 50% damage from the plant and room then destroy them. Making sure adult mites and mites form hatched eggs do not reenter the garden.
– Spray foliage especially under leaves with high pressure cold water ( as high pressure as the plants can take without ruining them ) to first knock off as many as possible.
( If only one or two plants are infected isolate them immediately and treat them separately. )
Sprays such as neem oil, pyrethrum, horticulture oil, nicotine sulfate, usually two or three applications at 5 to 10 day intervals will do the trick. Be sure to clean and disinfect the whole room as well.
horticultural oil smothers eggs and can be mixed with pyrethrum and homemade sprays to improve extermination.
KEY effective control measures: You must incorporate many different methods and products.
– Rotate sprays so mites do not develop immunity – here are a few to chose from
monterey horticultural oil concentrate (really good for preventing caterpillars as well) (organic)
Safer Brand Insect Killing Soap (organic)
Flying Skull Nuke Em Pest Control (organic )
Spider mites should be gone after two or three applications at 5 to 10 day intervals, Providing the sanitary prevented conditions are maintained.
Since eggs hatch in 5 to 10 days the second Spraying will kill the newly hatched eggs and the remaining adults.
The third and subsequent application will kill any of the new mites
As for Predatory insects
Once there’s a infestation predatorial insects really don’t work fast enough to exterminate them.
Pyrethrum (aerosol) is the best natural miticide. Apply two or three applications at 5 to 10 day intervals. pyrethrum is best for controlling spider mites. must be done with lights off and sealed room for a few hours then exhaust the room fully (but not recommend for in house grow rooms unless it can be done with no person or animals home until full exhausted ) This will sanitize the whole room as well as the plants. Be careful as it can burn the plants.
